Moving House Timeline: Your Eight Week Countdown Checklist

A week by week moving house checklist covering admin, packing, utilities and moving day, so nothing important gets left until the last minute.

Almost every stressful move we attend has the same cause, and it is rarely the removal itself. It is admin left too late: a meter reading nobody took, a redirection nobody set up, a loft nobody opened until the night before. Spread across eight weeks, the same tasks are entirely manageable. Here is the countdown we recommend to customers, adapted from what actually works on the day.

Eight weeks to go: decisions and bookings

  • Confirm your likely completion date with your solicitor, even if it is provisional.
  • Arrange removal surveys and compare quotes properly. Our guide to how much removals cost in the UK explains what to check before you sign.
  • Decide whether you want full packing, part packing or materials only.
  • Work out whether you need storage for any gap between homes.
  • Check whether your buildings and contents insurance covers the transition period.

Six weeks to go: declutter

This is the highest value week of the whole countdown. Everything you dispose of now is volume you do not pay to move, unpack or store.

  • Work room by room rather than by category. Finishing a space is motivating.
  • Book a council bulky waste collection or a tip slot early, as slots fill quickly.
  • Arrange charity collections for furniture, and check what your chosen charity will and will not take.
  • Start listing anything worth selling. Six weeks gives you time for it to actually sell.
  • Empty the loft, garage and shed. These are where moves overrun.

Four weeks to go: the paperwork

Set aside a single evening and work through your change of address list in one sitting.

  • Book Royal Mail redirection, which needs several working days to activate.
  • Update your driving licence and vehicle log book through GOV.UK.
  • Notify your bank, pension providers, insurers and employer.
  • Contact both councils about council tax closing and opening accounts.
  • Register to vote at the new address on the electoral register.
  • Arrange broadband at the new property. Installation lead times are frequently the longest of anything on this list.
  • Register with a new GP, dentist and vet if you are moving out of the area.
  • Tell schools and nurseries, and confirm start dates.

Three weeks to go: start packing

  • Begin with anything seasonal or rarely used: books, spare bedding, out of season clothing, decorations.
  • Label every box with the room it is going to at the new house, not the room it came from.
  • Keep boxes to a weight one person can carry. Books belong in small boxes.
  • Photograph the back of your television and hi fi before unplugging anything.
  • Note anything fragile or high value so it can be recorded and packed properly. If you would rather hand this over, our professional packing team can take on as much or as little as you like.

Two weeks to go: the practical details

  • Confirm parking at both addresses and apply for suspended bays or permits if needed. Councils often require notice of a week or more.
  • Arrange care for children and pets on the day.
  • Run down the freezer deliberately rather than throwing food away at the end.
  • Order any furniture that needs to be waiting at the new house.
  • Confirm the removal booking, crew arrival time and contact numbers in writing.

One week to go

  • Pack an essentials box for the first night: kettle, mugs, tea, toilet roll, phone chargers, medication, bedding, towels, a torch and basic tools.
  • Set aside valuables, passports and documents to travel with you rather than in the van.
  • Dismantle flat pack furniture if you are handling it yourself, and bag the fixings to the item.
  • Defrost the freezer at least 24 hours before, and drain the washing machine.
  • Confirm key collection arrangements with your solicitor or estate agent.

Moving day itself

  1. Take meter readings at the old property and photograph them with a timestamp.
  2. Walk the crew through the house, pointing out anything fragile and anything that is not going.
  3. Keep the kettle, essentials box and pets in one room that is loaded last.
  4. Do a final check of the loft, shed, garage, under stairs cupboard and behind doors.
  5. Take meter readings at the new property as soon as you arrive.
  6. Direct boxes to their labelled rooms as they come in. Ten seconds now saves ten minutes later.
  7. Make up the beds before you do anything else. You will be grateful by nine o’clock.

Frequently asked questions

  • When should I book a removal firm?
Four to six weeks ahead is comfortable for most moves. Month end Fridays and the summer months book out first, so if your date is fixed, arrange the survey as early as you can.
  • What if completion is delayed on the day?
It happens more often than people expect. A good removal firm will have a plan, which usually means the loaded vehicle waits or your belongings go into overnight storage. Ask about this at quote stage so you know the position in advance.
  • How long does a full house move take?
A typical three bedroom local move is a single day, with loading through the morning and unloading in the afternoon. Larger properties, difficult access or long distances may run into a second day.
  • Should I pack myself or use a packing service?
Self packing saves money, professional packing saves time and is generally better protected against damage. Many customers use a hybrid: the crew packs the kitchen, glass and artwork, the family packs everything else.
